OVERPASS - 24/05/2026
Building anticipation for their forthcoming debut album, ‘Elsewhere, Always’, Overpass embarked on a run of intimate UK record store shows, giving fans an early glimpse of new material before its official release. Arriving off the back of sold-out headline dates, major festival appearances, and most recently supporting The Royston Club at iconic UK venues, the Birmingham four-piece have spent the last few years steadily building momentum. As a result, the opportunity to see Overpass - comprised of Max Newbold, Indie Armstrong, Elliot Rawlings and Jake Bishop - perform in 180-capacity Resident felt like a rare occasion. Sold out well in advance, the room was packed with devoted fans eager to hear their new music before anyone else.
Opening with lead single 'Union Station', Overpass immediately demonstrated why there is so much excitement surrounding the album - stripped of the production that accompanies headline shows, the emotional lyricism and raw passion was able to take centre stage. Before long, frontman Max Newbold was encouraging the crowd to sing along to tracks they already knew, a request that was met by the audience of dedicated fans who had pre-ordered the record months in advance.
'Fall In Love', which made its live debut earlier this year, proved popular with the Brighton crowd - despite being currently unreleased on streaming platforms, many in attendance already knew every word - highlighting just how eagerly fans have embraced the new material ahead of the album's release. The band followed the singalong with a slower, acoustic rendition of ‘Bonnie & Clyde Pt. 2’, its wistful lyricism and soaring melody carrying the performance. The quieter arrangement highlighted a different side of Overpass, proving that their songs remain just as effective when reduced to their bare essentials.
Between tracks, bassist Indie Armstrong offered insight into the creative process behind some of the album's newest material. Introducing 'Spinning', she explained how much the song meant to the band, revealing that it had been written collectively and was one of the final additions to the record. Discussing the origins of 'Get Up!', one of the album's heavier tracks, she reflected on the band's European run supporting Wunderhorse last summer. This opportunity marked a significant turning point for the four-piece, with the momentum and energy of those shows feeding directly into the song's creation.
Closing with recent single 'Heaven', Overpass delivered one final reminder of their knack for writing festival-ready indie anthems. As the song reached its climax, Newbold stepped back from the microphone, allowing the crowd to take over the vocals; the room responded instantly, carrying the chorus and bringing the performance to an uplifting conclusion. The evening was far from over, however, as the band returned to meet their fans for a signing. The lengthy queue that formed was further evidence of the connection Overpass have cultivated with their audience, with attendees jumping at the chance to share a brief conversation and celebrate the album's release with the band themselves.
Over the past few years, Overpass have progressed from promising newcomers to one of the UK's most exciting indie bands, earning coveted support slots, commanding major festival stages and selling out headline shows across the country. If ‘Elsewhere, Always’ fulfils the promise displayed across this performance, their upward trajectory looks set to continue for some time, and given the intimacy of the venue, it seems unlikely that they’ll be playing other stages of this size anytime soon!
